TOULOUSE

One of the first things I encountered when arriving in Toulouse was this street name. I took it as an omen that it was time for me to take another shower.

L'une des premières choses que j'ai rencontrées en arrivant à Toulouse a été ce nom de rue. Je l'ai pris comme un présage qu'il était temps que je prenne encore une douche. (En anglais, féral signifie sauvage!)

 

Before taking the return flight to Malta I enjoyed a couple of days in an apartment right in the centre of Toulouse. The apartment has been magical: spacious, meticulously clean, appointed with everything right down to cosmetics, simple consumable drinks and foods, laundry detergent, a complete kitchen - I simply couldn't fault it.

My role changed from hiker to loafer. Wandering about, having a coffee here and a Ricard there, soaking up the sights and sounds of France. I engaged numerous people in short conversations, and I indulged in a tiny bit of shopping - some bits for me, but mostly for others.

Avant de prendre le vol de retour vers Malte, j'ai passé quelques jours dans un appartement en plein centre de Toulouse. L'appartement a été magique : spacieux, méticuleusement propre, équipé de tout, jusqu'aux cosmétiques, boissons et aliments simples, détergent à lessive, une cuisine complète - je n'ai tout simplement rien à lui reprocher.

Mon rôle est passé de randonneur à flâneur. Flâner, prendre un café ici et un Ricard là, absorber des images et des sons de la France. J'ai engagé de nombreuses personnes dans de courtes conversations et je me suis livré à un tout petit peu d'achats - quelques morceaux pour moi, mais surtout pour les autres.

This is a veal prosciutto salad, with a tuna-cream sauce and piquant red onions. I thought this was an unusual combination, so I gave it a try. It made a change from the usual Cesar or smoked salmon salads.

Il s'agit d'une salade de prosciutto de veau, avec une sauce à la crème de thon et des oignons rouges piquants. Je pensais que c'était une combinaison inhabituelle, alors j'ai essayé. C'est différent des salades Cesar ou saumon fumé habituelles.

The focal point of my wanderings were the classic French markets. They have a culture all of their own.  The French experience of a market is to immerse one's self completely; to look, smell, touch, taste, wander, sit, drink, eat, discuss, enjoy. Is it any wonder that immersion in French culture has been a key element of my randonee?

Le point central de mes pérégrinations était les marchés français classiques. Ils ont une culture unique. L'expérience française d'un marché, c'est de s'immerger complètement ; regarder, sentir, toucher, goûter, flâner, s'asseoir, boire, manger, discuter, apprécier. Faut-il s'étonner que l'immersion dans la culture française ait été un élément clé de ma randonnée ?

There are also many striking architectural buildings here in Toulouse. One of the striking buildings is close to the Capitol, with a 19th century cast iron clock tower. And here French architecture is taking art deco to an entirely new level. This design has been created during the construction process - not painted onto the surface. Isn't it striking?

Il y a aussi de nombreux bâtiments architecturaux frappants ici à Toulouse. L'un des bâtiments les plus remarquables se trouve à proximité du Capitole, avec une tour d'horloge en fonte du XIXe siècle. Et ici, l'architecture française porte l'art déco à un plus haut niveau. Cette conception a été créée pendant le processus de construction - non peinte sur la surface. N'est-ce pas frappant ?

 

On my last night in Toulouse I found a quiet restaurant in a small side-street not far from my apartment. I chose a simple fixed price menu. Three courses for 28 euros all up. OMG. Why don't they do this in Malta?? I'm sorry, but I had consumed the dessert - Chocolate Marquise in Creme Anglaise - before I remembered to photograph it.

Lors de ma dernière nuit à Toulouse, j'ai trouvé un restaurant tranquille dans une petite rue proche à mon appartement. J'ai choisi un menu simple à prix fixe. Trois plats pour 28 euros tout compris.

Incroyable! Pourquoi ne font-ils pas cela à Malte ?? Je suis désolé, mais j'avais consommé le dessert - marquise au chocolat à la crème anglaise - avant de penser à le photographier.

 

Two men sat at the table next to me and struggled with the menu. They had a little English and no French. Russian speakers. I helped them to order, then bought them the French equivalent of a shot of vodka, and toasted them 'nastrovia'. Long story short - I now have two more best friends! Turns out they are the Chairman and the President of the national tourism authority of Tajikistan. We got talking, and Damion now has an open invitation to go mountain climbing in Tajikistan as their guest!!

Deux hommes se sont assis à la table à côté de moi et ont lutté avec le menu. Ils avaient un peu d'anglais et pas de français. Russophones. Je les ai aidés à commander leurs repas, puis je leur ai acheté l'équivalent français d'un verre de vodka et leur ai porté un toast de la « nastrovia ». Pour faire court, j'ai maintenant deux meilleurs amis de plus ! Il s'avère qu'ils sont le président directeur-générale et le président de conseil de l'autorité nationale du tourisme du Tadjikistan. Nous avons bavardé et Damion (mon fils) a maintenant une invitation ouverte pour faire de l'alpinisme au Tadjikistan en tant qu'invité !!

(The clear liquid spirit was Eau de Vie Poire William, a very lovely pear-based cognac-like spirit that leaves most vodkas for dead. Cost almost as much as my dinner!!!)

(L'alcool liquide clair était Eau de Vie Poire William, un très bon alcool à base de poire semblable à du cognac qui est de loin supérieur à la plupart des vodkas. Il a coûté presque autant que mon dîner !!!)

We said Dasvidaniya, then I came home to finish packing my rucksack for my departure in the morning. I do hope you've enjoyed travelling with me on my hike across Occitania.
