CASTELNAUDARY
It can't always be about the weather. Constant drizzle kept me in weatherproof jacket and pants all day today. Sometimes I was walking into a headwind, often there were puddles strung together like pearls. The going was slow and the ground was messy. You get the picture.
Il ne peut pas toujours s'agir du climat. La bruine constante m'a causé de porter une veste et un pantalon imperméables toute la journée aujourd'hui. Parfois je marchais dans un vent de face, souvent il y avait des flaques d'eau enfilées comme un collier de perles. La progression était lente et le sol était boueux. Vous comprenez.
Mon chemin aujourd'hui m'a semblé large et dégagé... et ce fut pour un moment. Plus tard le chemin est devenu plus humide, plus lourd et un peu plus étroit mais le paysage restait toujours très pittoresque.
The Brits might say this is 'lovely weather for ducks' and it truly was. With little traffic on the canal, they were having a ball. There were so many locks on this section that walking was still faster than boating, so there was a friendly banter between me and some German boaties for a while, until I left them way behind me.
Les Anglais pourraient dire que c'est "un temps magnifique pour les canards" et c'était vraiment le cas. Avec peu de circulation sur le canal, ils s'amusaient. Il y avait tellement d'écluses sur cette section que la marche était encore plus rapide que la voile, donc il y a eu une plaisanterie amicale entre moi et un équipage de bateau allemand pendant un moment, jusqu'à ce que je les laisse derrière moi.

Then, just when you need it, nature just bursts out like this! I was feeling a bit weary, sick of scraping the mud off my boots, and then I turned a corner to be met by a brilliant burst of colour. Such delicate blossoms in their coarse native landscape just lifted my spirits like nothing else could.
Puis, juste au moment où vous en avez besoin, la nature éclate comme ça ! Je me sentais un peu fatigué, j'en avais marre de gratter la boue de mes bottes, puis j'ai tourné un coin pour être accueilli par une brillante explosion de couleurs. Ces fleurs délicates dans leur paysage natal grossier m'ont juste remonté le moral comme rien d'autre ne pouvait le faire.

On the left is a 3 lock ladder. I'm standing on the top of one, photographing two more. On the right is a tightly grouped 5-lock ladder just outside Castelnaudary.
Sur la gauche se trouve une échelle à 3 écluses. Je me tiens au sommet d'un, en photographiant deux autres. Sur la droite se trouve une échelle à 5 écluses étroitement groupées juste hors de Castelnaudary.
I was fatigued by the time the church spire of Castelnaudary appeared on the horizon. There were still a few kilometres to go to my hotel. Here the canal opens into a wide, man-made lake from which both the water and the boats make their way downstream. It had taken almost 6 hours of solid slog to get to it from Bram.
J'étais fatigué quand le clocher de l'église de Castelnaudary est apparu à l'horizon. Il y avait encore quelques kilomètres pour aller à mon hôtel. Ici, le canal débouche sur un large lac artificiel à partir duquel l'eau et les bateaux se dirigent vers l'aval. Il avait fallu près de 6 heures de marche acharnée pour y arriver depuis Bram.
Remember the ducks on the canal - the ones that it is such good weather for? Turns out they are the main ingredient in Castelnaudery's famous cassoulet. This was last night's dinner. Scrumptious
Vous souvenez-vous des canards sur le canal - ceux pour qui le temps est si beau ? Il s'avère qu'ils sont l'ingrédient principal du fameux cassoulet de Castelnaudery. C'était le dîner ce soir. Délicieuse.
