LEZIGNAN-CORBIERES 2

The apartment I had booked in Lezignan-Corbieres proved to be a complete disappointment. Still, I was staying only one night, so I just took it in my stride. By the time I arrived in the town, the rain had started and it only became heavier as I headed off towards the only restaurant that Google showed was nearby. It was quite a walk, and when I arrived I found it completely booked up. So I turned around, headed back up the long hill and headed closer to the town centre.

I had only walked a few metres from my original starting point, when I saw what appeared to be a restaurant at the other end of a small cobbled street. It turned out to be a gourmand bistro run by Lou Griffou, and is highly regarded in the region for its excellent cuisine. Of course I didn't know this at the time, and so I walked in, asked for a table and was immediately seated. What great good luck.

L'appartement que j'avais réservé à Lézignan-Corbières etait une déception totale. Pourtant, je ne restais qu'une nuit, alors je l'ai pris dans ma foulée. Au moment où je suis arrivé en ville, la pluie avait commencé et elle n'a fait que s'alourdir alors que je me dirigeais vers le seul restaurant que Google montrait à proximité. C'était assez loin à pied, et quand je suis arrivé, je l'ai trouvé complet. J'ai donc fait demi-tour, remonté la longue colline et me suis rapproché du centre-ville.

Je n'avais parcouru que quelques mètres depuis mon point de départ initial, quand j'ai vu ce qui semblait être un restaurant à l'autre bout d'une petite rue pavée. Il s'est avéré être un bistrot gourmand dirigé par Lou Griffou, très apprécié dans la région pour son excellente cuisine. Bien sûr, je ne le savais pas à l'époque, alors je suis entré, j'ai demandé une table et j'ai été immédiatement assis. Quelle bonne chance.

Dinner in Lezignan-Corbieres that night was an exceptional fixed price, three course menu, comprising:

• An Individual quiche Lorraine and salad with a light but creamy horseradish dressing.
• Three triangular slices of fresh tuna, warmed under the grill and served in an orange sauce.
• Baba au Rhum, served with a generous helping of its famous sauce.

Le dîner à Lézignan-Corbières ce soir-là était un menu à prix fixe exceptionnel, de trois plats, comprenant :

• Une quiche lorraine individuelle et une salade verte avec une vinaigrette légère mais crémeuse au raifort.
• Trois tranches triangulaires de thon frais, chauffées sous le gril et servies dans une sauce à l'orange.
• Baba au Rhum, servi avec une portion généreuse de sa sauce celebre.

  

Total price? In a gourmet restaurant in the town centre? €18.90 euros (about ₤16.50). I bought a half carafe of rosé for €13 and was entirely replete by the end of the meal. 

I hope you enjoy the photos of my meal as much as I enjoyed eating it. (But there's little chance of that!)

Prix ​​total? Dans un bistrot gourmand du centre-ville ? 18,90 € (environ 16,50 ₤). J'ai acheté une demi-carafe de rosé pour 13 € et j'étais entièrement rempli à la fin du repas.

At the table next to mine a French family were discretely celebrating the birthday of the mother, whom I estimate to be of a similar age to myself. Her husband was with her along with her son and his wife. I offered them a glass of champagne with my compliments and for the next hour or so we talked and became firm friends.  

Rolande and Pierre  (I believe) are now retired and were in the throes of relocating to Lezignan-Corbieres. Arnaud and Cecile are directors of a specialist coatings company engaged in the application of protective coverings to the facades of buildings. As my cousin Alan in the UK is working in a similar field, I had a basic familiarity with his service and we connected well. When the evening came to an end, we had formed some firm friendships, and Rolande has been diligent in maintaining a liaison since that time.

A la table voisine de la mienne, une famille française fêtait discrètement l'anniversaire de la mère, que j'estime avoir une âge pareil a moi. Son mari était avec elle avec leur fils Arnaud et sa femme Cécile. Je leur ai offert une coupe de champagne avec mes compliments et pendant environ une heure, nous avons parlé et nous sommes devenus de bons amis.

Rolande et Pierre (je crois) sont maintenant à la retraite et étaient en train de déménager à Lézignan-Corbières. Arnaud et Cécile sont dirigeants d'une société spécialisée dans les revêtements protecteurs sur les façades des bâtiments. Comme mon cousin Alan au Royaume-Uni travaille dans un domaine similaire, j'avais une connaissance de base de son service et nous nous sommes bien connectés. A la fin de la soirée, nous avions noué de solides amitiés, et Rolande s'a occupé à maintenir une liaison entre nos deux familles depuis ce temps.
