PORT D' EMBOUCHURE

From my lodgings in Toulouse it was about a seven kilometre walk in a 270 degree loop to meet up with the Canal du Midi, then follow its banks to the man-made basin at the very start of both the the Canal du Midi and the Canal de Brienne. Into this basin a tributary of the river Garonne has been channelled to furnish the massive volume of water needed to flush this extraordinary canal system.

This engineering marvel has created The Port d'Embouchure - a point from which channels can be navigated in an uninterrupted flow across France, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea.

It was only a half-day hike, but to leave it out would somehow have seemed incomplete.

Depuis mon logement à Toulouse, il fallait environ sept kilomètres de marche dans une boucle à 270 degrés pour rejoindre le Canal du Midi, puis suivre ses rives jusqu'au bassin artificiel au tout début du Canal du Midi et du Canal de Brienne. Dans ce bassin, un affluent de la Garonne a été canalisé pour fournir l'énorme volume d'eau nécessaire pour remplir cet extraordinaire système de canaux.

Cette merveille d'ingénierie a créé Le Port d'Embouchure - un point à partir duquel les canaux peuvent être navigués dans un flux ininterrompu à travers la France, de l'océan Atlantique à la mer Méditerranée.

Ce n'était qu'une demi-journée de randonnée, mais l'omettre m'aurait donne le sens que c'etait incomplet.

 

The canal path encounters different architecture in a major city, but it retains its consistent beauty.

Yet another bridge over the canal as I make my way towards its source. And finally, the Port d'Embouchure.

In the left photo are the Twin Bridges which span the two canals and to the left of them is the bridge spanning the tributary of the Garonne River. Between the Twin Bridges is the sculpture wall that celebrates the achievements that made this exceptional feat of engineering happen. In the photo below you can see more clearly the section of the sculpture that focuses on the digging of the canal systems.

Entre Les Ponts Jumeaux se trouve le mur de sculptures qui célèbre les réalisations qui ont permis à cet exploit technique exceptionnel de se produire. Sur la photo ci-dessous, vous pouvez voir plus clairement la section de la sculpture qui se concentre sur le creusement des systèmes de canaux.

I know that I could have stopped there, but I don't like loose ends. So, quite delighted that in the middle of a bustling city, it's still possible to find beautiful walking trails such as this, I followed it until, at the end of the trail leading from the Port d'Embouchure, I found myself at the place where it all began: the powerful Garonne River.

Alors, tout ravi qu'au milieu d'une ville animée il soit encore possible de trouver de beaux sentiers pédestres comme celui-ci, j'ai suivi le chemin emenant du Port d'Embouchure jusqu'à ce qu'au bout je me suis trouvé à l'endroit où il tout a commencé : la puissante Garonne.
