FRONTIGNAN

As promised, today's walk presented some spectacular scenery. The Canal du Rhône at Sète is a channel that runs through narrow spit of land between a salt lake and the sea. (Australians might think of the Coorong on one side and Lake Eyre on the other, with a big spoon drain running the entire length between them).

Comme promis, la promenade d'aujourd'hui comportait des paysages spectaculaires. Le Canal du Rhône à Sète est un canal qui longe une étroite bande de terre entre un lac salé et la mer. (Les Australiens pourraient penser au Coorong d'un côté et au Lac Eyre de l'autre, avec un long canal sur toute la longueur entre eux).

 

Towards the end of that run, it's possible to exit the canal, which I did, to follow some low scrub through the marshland and into a local forest called the Bois d'Aresquiers.

Vers la fin de cette course, il est possible de sortir du canal, ce que j'ai fait, pour suivre des broussailles basses à travers le marais et dans une forêt locale appelée le Bois d'Aresquiers.

 

 

 

A beautiful change of scenery, with cool shadows and multiple paths to follow.

Un beau dépaysement, avec des ombres fraîches et de multiples chemins à suivre.

 

 At the end of the wood I followed a coastal path until the ground became quite boggy. At that point I continued along a winding wooden pathway set about a foot above the swamp.

A la sortie du bois j'ai suivi un sentier côtier jusqu'à ce que le sol devienne trop marécageux. À ce moment-là, j'ai continué le long d'un passerelle en bois sinueux situé à environ 30 centimetres au-dessus du marais.

The wooden boardwalk gave way to another coastal path, as narrow as a rabbit trail, with shallow lakes and saltpans on both sides. It was tricky letting cyclists, runners and dog-walkers past, as one slip and someone was going to get wet.

La passerelle a cédé la place à un autre chemin côtier, aussi étroit qu'un sentier de lapin, avec des lacs peu profonds et des marais salants des deux côtés. Il était difficile de laisser passer les cyclistes, les coureurs et les promeneurs de chiens, car une seule glissade et quelqu'un allait se mouiller.

 

 

After a long, shadeless walk I reached a low bridge, and on walking underneath it I suddenly found myself close to the town centre of Frontignan, where the Sunday markets were still in full swing, and a cold beer was not far away. I supped one while listening to a talented, travelling troupe of drummers.

Après une longue promenade sans ombre, j'atteignis un pont bas, et en marchant dessous je me trouvai soudain près du centre-ville de Frontignan, où les marchés du dimanche battaient encore leur plein, et une bière fraîche n'était pas loin. J'en ai gouté un en écoutant une troupe talentueuse de percussionnistes itinérante.

 

The last leg took me up a meandering country lane and through the portals of a small family vineyard that is also being run as a chambre-d'hôte (BnB). I' m sure I'll be comfortable for my one night stay.

La dernière étape m'a emmené sur une route de campagne sinueuse et à travers les portes d'un petit vignoble familial qui est également géré comme une chambre d'hôtes confortable.
